A single-axle utility trailer is the one most people buy first, and plenty of people never need a second one. One axle, an open deck, a ramp gate at the back, and a weight that an ordinary SUV or half-ton can pull without a second thought. The trade-off against a tandem-axle trailer is capacity and highway manners, not quality. What you get back is a lighter trailer, a lower price, one set of tires and bearings instead of two, and something you can push around a tight driveway by hand.

The bulk of what we carry, in 5x8, 5x10, 6x12, and 7x14 at 3K GVWR. The fold-down sides are the feature worth understanding: drop a side and you can slide lumber, drywall, or fence panels straight on instead of walking everything around to the gate. Put them up and you have a contained box that keeps mulch and branches off the highway behind you.
Load Trail and Diamond T steel utilities
Straightforward solid-side and ramp-gate steel trailers, the workhorse end of the single-axle market. Steel costs less than aluminum up front and can be welded back together after abuse, which matters if the trailer lives on a job site rather than in a garage.
Black Rhino aluminum
Aluminum does not rust, which is a real argument in Colorado, where the magnesium chloride sprayed on Front Range highways does more damage to a trailer than snow ever does. Single Axle or Tandem Axle?
Buy single axle if your heaviest regular load is a mower, an ATV, yard waste, a few pallets, or a household move. Buy tandem if you will routinely carry more than about 2,000 pounds, tow at highway speed on I-25 or I-70 rather than around town, or want the stability two axles give you in Front Range crosswinds.
There is one safety difference worth knowing before you decide. On a tandem trailer, a blown tire leaves three wheels carrying the load and you can usually get to the shoulder in a controlled way. On a single axle, a blowout is the whole side of the trailer, and it happens fast. It is not a reason to avoid single axle, but it is a reason to check tire pressure and age rather than only tread depth.

Single-Axle Utility Trailer Questions
Does a single-axle utility trailer need trailer brakes in Colorado?
It depends on weight, and 3K GVWR trailers sit right on the line. Colorado law (C.R.S. 42-4-223) requires brakes on all wheels once a trailer's gross weight reaches 3,000 pounds. A trailer rated at 3,000 pounds and loaded to its rating meets that threshold; the same trailer carrying a lawn mower does not.
Because it is a judgment call rather than a blanket rule, ask us how a specific unit is equipped before you tow it home. It is a five-second question that decides whether your vehicle needs a brake controller.
How much can a single-axle utility trailer actually carry?
Less than the GVWR number, always. Payload is GVWR minus the trailer's own weight, so a 3,000 lb trailer that weighs 900 pounds empty gives you roughly 2,100 pounds of cargo, not 3,000.
That is still a yard of wet topsoil with room to spare, or a mower and a full load of yard waste. But it is worth doing the subtraction before you buy, because the number on the sticker is the number people plan around and it is never the number you get.
Can I tow one of these with an SUV?
Usually yes, and that is the whole point of the single-axle class. A 5x8 or 5x10 at 3K GVWR sits inside the tow rating of most mid-size SUVs and every pickup.
Two Colorado caveats. Check the tongue weight limit as well as the tow rating, since tongue weight is what people exceed first. And remember engines lose output with altitude, so the factory tow number is optimistic at 5,280 feet and worse again on a mountain grade.
How do I stop a single-axle trailer from swaying on the highway?
Load it nose-heavy. Put roughly 60% of the weight ahead of the axle and 40% behind it, which puts positive weight on the tongue and keeps the trailer pulling straight instead of hunting.
Sway on a single axle is almost always a loading problem rather than a trailer problem. If the load sits behind the axle, no amount of slowing down fixes it, and a crosswind on the stretch of I-25 north of Denver will find it every time.
Do I have to title and register a utility trailer in Colorado?
Yes, with no exemption for small trailers. Colorado titles and registers every trailer, including a 5x8. You have 60 days from the purchase date to register at your county motor vehicle office, and the state adds a $10 per month late fee after that.
This catches people who moved here from states that leave light trailers alone. We send the paperwork with you at delivery so the counter visit is quick.
What maintenance does a single-axle trailer need?
Three things, and only one of them is obvious. Check tire pressure before every haul and replace tires by age as well as tread, because a trailer tire that sits in the sun for five years fails before it wears out. Repack the wheel bearings on schedule, since one axle means no margin if a bearing goes. And keep the wiring plug and ground connection clean.
That last one is the Colorado item: magnesium chloride road treatment eats the harness and the ground first, which is why trailer lights are the most common complaint we hear in spring. Rinse the underside after winter trips.
