A car hauler is a flat open deck built to carry a vehicle and nothing more complicated than that: steel frame, wood or steel floor, ramps at the back, and enough deck to fit a car without the bumper hanging off. How Long a Deck Do You Need?
Measure your vehicle bumper to bumper, then add three or four feet for the winch, the strap points, and the fact that you will not park it perfectly centered. Buying short is the mistake people make once.
18 Foot
Fits most sedans and small crossovers with room to strap down. The lightest of the group and the easiest to store, but tight for a full-size truck or anything on a lift kit.
20 Foot
The middle of the range and the one that covers the most vehicles. A full-size sedan, most SUVs, and a shop truck all fit without hanging over the dovetail.
22 to 24 Foot
For crew-cab pickups, long-wheelbase vans, or hauling a car plus a pile of parts and tools. If you are moving project vehicles that do not roll, the extra deck gives your winch somewhere to work.
Ramps, Dovetails, and Ground Clearance
A dovetail is the slight downward angle at the back of the deck. It shortens the ramp angle so a low car does not scrape going on. Slide-in ramps tuck under the deck and pull out when you need them, which keeps them out of the way and out of the weather. If you are loading something genuinely low, a tilt trailer lays the whole deck down and removes the ramp problem entirely.
Car Hauler or Equipment Trailer?
They look similar and people mix them up constantly. A car hauler is lighter, rated around 7K to 10K, and built for something with four tires that rolls. An equipment trailer is heavier, rated well past that, and built for a skid steer or a tractor with steel tracks and concentrated weight. Putting a mini excavator on a car hauler is how axles bend. What size car hauler do I need?
Measure your vehicle bumper to bumper and add three or four feet. An 18-foot deck handles most sedans and small crossovers, 20 foot covers the majority of vehicles including SUVs, and 22 to 24 foot is what you want for crew-cab pickups, long vans, or a car plus tools.
What GVWR do I need for a car hauler?
Our car haulers are rated at 7K and 10K GVWR. Subtract the trailer weight from the rating to get your usable payload, then compare that to your vehicle. Most cars land between 3,000 and 4,500 pounds, so a 7K trailer covers ordinary hauling and 10K gives you margin for heavier trucks.
Do I want slide-in ramps or a dovetail?
A dovetail angles the rear of the deck down so the approach is gentler, which matters for low cars. Slide-in ramps store under the deck and pull out to load. Most of our units have both. For very low vehicles, a tilt deck is the better answer.
Can I tow a car hauler with a half-ton truck?
Often yes for an 18 or 20 foot trailer with an ordinary car on it, but check your truck owner manual for its tow rating and remember the load counts, not just the empty trailer. Bring your truck to the lot and we will match a trailer to it.
