Is an aluminum trailer worth the extra cost over steel?
In Colorado, often yes. Aluminum does not rust, which matters because the magnesium chloride CDOT sprays on Front Range roads is far harder on a trailer than snow is. It also weighs less, so more of your tow vehicle's capacity goes to cargo instead of trailer.

Bi-fold gate or standard ramp gate?
